Terravita hosts first back-to-back AWGA events

by Mary Ann Souter

It was an exciting May weekend at Terravita when, for the first time, a course hosted back-to-back AWGA events.  Kerry Postillion competed with 34 players on Saturday to become the Overall Winner of the AWGA Weekend Classic.  The next day, 40 women played in the Just 4 Fun Golf Day utilizing the excellent amenities at award winning Terravita Golf Club. Steve Mallory, Director of Golf, worked diligently to give our women a great experience, noting that Terravita can accommodate every facet of player ability, a necessary component for holding two distinct events for various skill levels. Its two way driving range and two complete chipping, sand and putting areas gave players an incomparable practice area. Just one more top notch course for AWGA tournament play!

Overall Winner:   Kerry Postillion enjoys the tough competition found in AWGA tournaments and the challenging courses they choose as venues.

Overall Net Winner:  Vicky Scott said when her pitching and putting are working, she plays well. Her mental game is also improving.

Avid Tournament Players:  Of the 35 players, six were members of the Working Women’s Golf Association, a group of 74 which plays one Sunday a month at city courses. Most women join because they play on weekends, but the bonds of friendship have grown in a most impressive way in this club. These women are truly friends. They take weekend trips together, play in AWGA events, and drive to tournaments all over the state as a group. Some joined the WWGA over 20 years ago so it’s not a surprise they consider each other lifelong friends, not just golf buddies. One member joined because of her schedule but “stays because the women are so friendly.” Another was invited by a friend. “It was so nice to play fun golf instead of competitive golf. Now I have a group of ladies who enjoy the game and its traditions.” One more said, “I know women from all over the state now and have fun while playing in “grown-up” AWGA tournaments!” Another summed it up, “The WWGA gives me the opportunity to meet people I wouldn’t normally meet. When I retire, I may join a weekday group but I’ll still play with the women of the WWGA.”
