People are happy when they get to the golf course. They have four hours ahead of them doing something they enjoy, with friends, in a beautiful and tranquil setting. Rarely do we think about work, home projects, or any other so called important things. There’s just golf and all that goes with it.

All we know is we will hit some good shots, and we’ll hit some bad ones – hopefully, not too many. We’ll have good conversation with our playing partners, and maybe a drink afterwards to rehash what had happened out there.

Golf is an interesting game, a gentleman’s game. We call penalties on ourselves, even though it may cost us a trophy, thousands of dollars, or a round of drinks. Where else does that happen?

Good people play golf. A lot of my friends are golfers, and I have to say golfers are different from the rest of the people walking around. I don’t know why we’re different, we just are. Special people, some are really special.

One of those really special people is Nancy Howard of the Arizona Golfer magazine. I met Nancy 15 years ago when she came to Mazatlan to do an article on Estrella del Mar. We hit it off from the moment we met.

That week we played golf, had dinners, and a little wine. And, laughed!! It’s impossible to be anywhere near her and not get sucked in! Her love of golf and joy for life is contagious.

It was no surprise when I received her monthly email reminding me of the upcoming deadline for my article. This happens every month. But what followed shocked me – this was going to be the last article any of us would be doing. Nancy is retiring!!

What am I going to do when I don’t have a deadline every month? What is SHE going to do when she doesn’t have a deadline every month? I’m worried about her!

She’ll probably be just fine deadline free. She can play more golf. She’ll have more time to spread her joy and love new friends. Maybe she’ll even come back to Mazatlan for a vacation! Can’t wait!

The world needs more Nancy Howards who encourage and inspire, and give so much joy to others. If you haven’t met her and have a chance to, grab it, because she is one of those really, really special people!!

Congratulations Nancy! And thank you for all you have done for golf and happiness in Arizona and across the Southwest. Now go enjoy it!
