Gamble Sands Golf Club named to the list of Golfweek’s Best: Modern Courses, 2015

Gamble Sands Golf Club, which opened for public play in August of 2014, was recently named to the list of “Golfweek’s Best: Modern Courses, 2015.” With this distinction, Gamble Sands becomes the third modern course (i.e. built after 1960) to make the cut in the state of Washington, joining Chambers Bay and Wine Valley.

Gamble Sands came in 73rd of the 100 courses on the list that is selected from a worldwide pool of roughly 20,000 golf courses constructed after 1960.

This latest honor comes after recognition by Golf Digest as the “Best New Course to Open in America in 2014,” as well as Golf Magazine’s 2014 listing of the “Best New Courses of The Year” and “Best New US Course You Can Play.”

Set upon sweeping sand dunes overlooking the Columbia River, the Sands course at Gamble Sands offers 18 holes of true links golf with traditional fine fescue grasses, wide fairways and massive greens.

With other acclaimed links courses such as Bandon Dunes and Tetherow under his belt, designer David McLay Kidd brought a wealth of expertise in true links course design to Gamble Sands.

“This is the once-in-a-lifetime site every golf course designer dreams of: rolling sand dunes overlooking a large body of water, a developer willing to build golf just for the love of the game, no homes, no hotel, no other development around. Just golf on sand, golf as it was truly meant to be,” said Kidd.

Gamble Sands is the brainchild of the Gebbers family, who have owned and operated one of the world’s biggest apple and cherry orchards on the property since the late 1800s. The golf facility project lifted off the ground several years ago, but was halted at the time of the economic downturn in 2008. After much hard work and careful consideration, the golf course opened August 2, 2014.

Gamble Sands is operated OB Sports Golf Management.  “I am stunned and happy at the same time,” said Orrin Vincent, Northwest native and Founder of OB Sports Golf Management. “It is very rare that a course enters the Top 100 after being open less than a year. This shows the tremendous impact it has made in the golf world and its affinity for true links golf. Congratulations to the Gebbers family.”

Gamble Sands, located in Brewster, Washington, four hours east of Seattle and 35 minutes north of Chelan, features the new 18-hole, 7,169-yard Sands golf course designed by famed Scottish-born course designer, David McLay Kidd.  Overlooking the nearby Columbia River, the Sands – a true links golf course – opened for play on August 2, 2014 with a second course on the horizon in the years to come.

Gamble Sands also offers a complete practice facilities, pro shop, café and pub. Further development that includes lodging is currently under consideration.
