Maryvale Golf Course set to re-open in November

By William Godfrey

Phoenix’ west side gets one of its most popular amenities back with the re-opening of the completely renovated Maryvale Golf Course. This 53-year-old community charm is scheduled for a November 15 unveiling.

John Fought, golf course architect explained that his Scottsdale-based golf design firm had two goals, “Make the course very playable and make it challenging. We feel we accomplished both.” Fought also shared that a pre-opening round in late September provided an early opportunity to tour the finished product, “We had a great time playing it and it was a blast.”

Players will immediately notice the removal of dozens of trees that opened corridors and widened fairways. The revitalized ‘flashed-up’ bunkers have added dimension to the elevated greens and creates a classic look compared to the previously flat layout.

Maryvale Golf Course, located at the northwest corner of 59th Avenue and Indian School, will also become the new home of the men and women’s golf teams of Grand Canyon University. A dazzling new 10,000 square foot, two-story clubhouse is scheduled to be completed in late fall.

When the revised 6,800-yard, par-71 course re-opens, the City of Phoenix recreation department will continue to set green fees, ranging from $16 to $43 for residents depending on time of year.

“The golf course will remain a public course for our residents to enjoy and will become even more of a tremendous asset for the city and state,” said Daniel Valenzuela, a Maryvale native and City of Phoenix Councilman. “I applaud the Parks & Recreation Board for their approval of this agreement and Grand Canyon University for further investing in our community.”
