The Wigwam announces 50th anniversary time capsule event

Newly renovated Gold course now open following three-month collaboration between JDM and Tom Lehman

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Gold and Patriot Courses at The Wigwam in Litchfield Park, Arizona. As part of the legendary resort’s continued efforts to renovate and enhance the property, the famed Gold course nicknamed the “Arizona Monster” for its well-known length and degree of difficulty, underwent an extensive renovation this summer.

In collaboration between property owner JDM and Tom Lehman,  the project included a thoughtful redesign concentrating on the intent of Robert Trent Jones, Sr.’s original design.

Focused on a complete bunker renovation, the project touched every hole including enhancements to fairway lines. In addition, all course bunkers now include a more traditional approach featuring white sand and a sod-down design.

“With Tom Lehman’s assistance, the Gold Course continues to stand among the nation’s finest,” said Leo Simonetta, Director of The Wigwam Golf Club.

The Gold Course has played host to numerous signature tournaments such as the U.S. Open Qualifier, U.S. Amateur Qualifier, several NCAA Regional Championships and the annual Patriot All-America Invitational, one of the top amateur competitions in the world. The 7,430 yard, par 72 course has also received numerous industry awards and accolades since opening in 1965, including “Top 100” golf courses in America.

The course officially reopened on October 19th. With its new design and the expertise of its Superintendent, Jason Snyder, The Wigwam Golf Club looks forward to presenting a great golf course this winter.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary and this Gold course milestone, resort management is planning a special event in early December featuring a time capsule burial to capture The Wigwam Golf’s past and look forward to its future.
