Mesa Hohokam Foundation announces 5th annual Wayne Brown Memorial Hohokam Golf Classic

The Mesa Hohokam Foundation, Inc., announced the details today for its 5th annual Wayne Brown Memorial Hohokam Golf Classic that will be held Friday, December 8th at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona. The Foundation is a 501 c3 non-profit charity that is dedicated to providing support for youth sports programs since its founding in 2001.

Mayor Brown’s indelible footprint was the way in which he moved the City of Mesa forward. Under his leadership, the city saw a new spring training facility built, a new convention center created and the establishment of the Mesa Arts Center.  Those that knew him can recall how he pursued everything with passion and worked tirelessly to improve the lives of people around him. One of these passions was that of mentoring youth through sports.

The Hohokams bring this vision to life by their commitment to mentoring youth in sports. To honor his legacy, the theme for this year’s Wayne Brown Memorial Golf Tournament is “pursue your dreams, live your passion.”

The format for the tournament is a 4-player Scramble with an 8am shotgun start. The event will sport a variety of on-course contests and activities, including a Hole-In-One opportunity for a new car. Players will enjoy a light breakfast and a lunch created by Outback Steakhouse.

This year’s event will also feature a Helicopter Ball Drop.  A total of 2,000 numbered golf balls will be “sold” for $10 each.  The balls will be dropped from a helicopter hovering over a hole on the driving range to start off the tournament. The first three balls into the hole (or closest to it) will determine the winners. First place winner receives $2,500 • Second place winner receives $1,500 • Third place winner receives $750. The helicopter ball drop is open to the public, and the winners will be announced at the luncheon following golf. Anyone can participate as the winners do not need to be present to win.

More information about the tournament, including online registration and sponsorships can be found on the tournament’s website at www.hohokamgolf.com .

The Mesa Hohokam Foundation was organized in 2001 to provide for the active management of the funding that results from the volunteer efforts provided by the individual Hohokam members during the course of each year’s Spring Training operations at Sloan Park and Hohokam Stadium.

The Foundation has expanded upon the long-standing Hohokam tradition of providing funding for financial grants within our community. The countless man hours contributed by the Hohokam membership each year, has resulted in the Foundation being privileged to provide over $2,000,000 of direct funding to a wide variety of youth sports activities since its inception.

Upon assuming responsibility for conducting the Hohokam’s annual Golf Tournament in 2013, the Foundation renamed the event to honor former City of Mesa Mayor and long-time Hohokam Member Wayne Brown.
