George Cunningham of Litchfield Park and Mieke Canan of Yuma took home the honors as the 2010 Boys and Girls State Junior Golf Champions at the recently concluded state championships at Forest Highlands Golf Club-Meadows Course- in Flagstaff, Arizona on July 6-7, 2010.
Cunningham and Neil Evans were tied at the end of 36 holes at 3 under par, 141, which forced a play off which Cunningham won with a birdie on the first playoff hole. Canan’s total of 2-under par, 142 for the two days was 4 strokes better than the 2nd place finisher, Saki Iida the 2009 girls state champion.
The tournament was organized by the Junior Golf Association of Arizona, Southwest Section PGA, Arizona Golf Association and the Arizona Women’s Golf Association for the third year. “By combining the efforts of all four organizations, the state junior golf championships for the boys and girls has been elevated to a new level”, said Tom Cunningham, Executive Director of the Junior Golf Association of Arizona. “Mike Bailey, Director of Golf at Forest Highlands Golf Club and his staff were just terrific in hosting the event for the second year. Our staffs, the players and their parents and other relatives are most appreciative of their enthusiasm for junior golf and their support”.
