The Accenture Match Play just wrapped up. The WGC or World Golf Championship or WAS GOLF COMPELLING? The top sixty-four or this year the top sixty-six in the world were present. Paul Casey and Phil Mickelson were absent from the field allowing Ernie Els into the event.

So the matches began on Wednesday with half of the favorites being knocked out; including world number one, Luke Donald. This golf was a yawner. Donald made seven bogies in that round.

The second event on the PGA Tour for Tiger was the WGCAMP. He made the best of his appearance for a while. He barely knocked off little known Fernandez-Castano in round one; but that was all he could muster as he was beaten by Nick Watney in the second round of matches. Tiger had a chance down to the bitter end but could not make a putt to save his chances for victory. Both matches had Tiger’s score over par. Not good enough.

Then you have world number two and three trying to take over world number one. All Rory or Lee had to do was win the Match Play. Well, Rory turned the tide on Lee and put him away in the semi-finals. It was a cold morning start and Rory started cold. The golf all week was cold. The weather was perfect. The golf was far from perfect.

Next Sang-Moon Bae, a rookie to the PGA Tour but knows how to win, was tough for a while but not strong enough to hold off Rory McIlroy. Bae (pronounced Bye) went bye bye and it was not exciting at all. This was the way the entire week went.

Was the golf course too hard? Are these guys into the Match Play format? It didn’t look like it. I saw more bad shots by the world’s greatest than I have witnessed in some time. The desert was under attack by errant golf shots.

One guy loved the golf course and loves Match Play. One guy stood out and he made a huge statement. Hunter Mahan played under the radar until the end.  Hunter faced off against Zach Johnson and sent Zach to the locker room after a 19-hole slugfest. Then Hunter decided no more close matches for a while. In the second and third matches hunter Mahan was the hottest golfer in the field. He makes nine birdies in each of those two rounds. No match was close. Hunter outplayed them all, and whether the event was match play or stroke play Hunter would have still been the champion of the WGCAMP. Way to go Hunter! Another USA Victory in 2012 on the PGA Tour.
