Tucked away in North Scottsdale, Arizona, is a private golf course that is inspiring, challenging and a world you would never imagine was there when entering from Pima and Pinnacle Peak Roads. Founded in 1976, by Jerry Nelson, Pinnacle Peak Country Club has been here for a while and has the trees to prove it. This was the first private golf facility in North Scottsdale and has been member-owned since 1976, as well. The country club is strategically positioned to offer magnificent views of both the Phoenix Valley skyline and the majestic McDowell Mountain Range.

You will find plenty of bunkers, water, huge mature trees, elevation changes, babbling brooks, and greens so slick you have to “slide” your putts in during your round. It’s easy to forget, because of all the foliage, that you are actually playing a bit of mountain golf on this course, but you need to remember when reading your putts or they will ruin that score on your card.

The golf course is spectacularly manicured and maintained bentgrass, originally designed by Dick Turner and redone by Dick Phelps, and recognized as one of the premier layouts in the region.

Hole #9, par 3, 170 yards from the tips. Absolutely spectacular par 3 with water and waterfalls while hitting towards the majestic views of the McDowell Mountains. It’s a pleasure – even if you don’t make a hole-in-one!

Hole #13, par 4, 439 yards from the tips. Large group of mature trees running all the way down the left to this dogleg left. Large cluster bunker on your right to an elevated green protected by a bunker on the left. Not a risk reward hole due to the group of trees, unless they really are 90% air as “they” say. Ask our “Treeman” in our group if that is true.

Hole #18, par 5, 588 yards from the tips. What a finishing hole!! Totally blind shot with plenty of large mature trees on both sides. 2nd shot is still blind with water and bunkers running along the left, plus a large cluster bunker to your right to a narrow landing area between the bunkers. Green has bunkers on the right and back center. (Note: Good course management. Drive your cart to the dogleg so you’ll know what trouble lies ahead!) Great hole, just ask the “Beach Baby” in our group.

Pinnacle Peak Country Club offers an excellent driving range, and pitching and putting areas conveniently located next to their snack shop serving all your needs prior to your round. The club offers a well-appointed golf shop in their $5 million expanded and recently renovated clubhouse.

Amenities of the club are lighted tennis courts, a fitness center offering the finest in equipment, attended men’s and women’s locker rooms and a large lap pool. The clubhouse is modern yet “homey and warm” and exquisite yet carries through with its traditional southwest feel. It offers expanded banquet, reception and dining rooms, plus a 19th Hole cocktail lounge with a huge window overlooking the patio and 18th hole with views of waterfalls and even a majestic swan named Birdie. (The story is that Bogie (her partner) was attacked by a coyote.)

If you are looking for a country club that is warm, friendly, an outstanding challenge and walkable, plus instantly becoming part of a family with its heartwarming members, then Pinnacle Peak Country Club is where you need to be. Just ask John Carmody, he’ll be glad to show you all around and bring you into the fold, immediately. They do make you feel right at home, from the moment you arrive!
